Mr. Barnaby Barrass

I have been a qualified doctor for over 24 years and a Consultant Urological Surgeon for more than 11 years. Throughout my career, I have been committed to providing high-quality, patient-centred care, combining extensive clinical experience with the latest advances in urological diagnosis and treatment. I completed my specialist urology training in London, Bristol and the Cambridge training rotation, gaining broad experience across all aspects of adult urology. Today, I treat the majority of general urological conditions and have particular expertise in urological diagnostics, prostate disease, bladder cancer, and minimally invasive surgical treatments. One area of which I am particularly proud is helping to develop one of the first urology "one-stop" clinics in the UK. This service allowed patients to undergo consultation, investigation and management planning within a single visit, significantly reducing waiting times and improving the patient experience. The project was recognised at annual hospital awards for its innovation and success. Over the course of my career, I have performed more than 15,000 urological procedures. These include over 1,200 prostate biopsies, almost 700 bladder cancer resections, more than 600 operations for benign prostate enlargement, hundreds of circumcisions, and over 400 ureteroscopic procedures for kidney stones. This extensive experience allows me to provide safe, evidence-based care tailored to each patient's individual needs. I have a particular interest in the latest minimally invasive treatments that help reduce recovery times and improve outcomes. I work in one of the highest-volume centres for benign prostate surgery in the UK. I have personally performed more than 600 procedures for men with bladder outflow obstruction due to benign prostate enlargement including aquablation, Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), Urolift and Rezum procedures. I also help train senior urology trainees from across the UK who visit our unit to learn the latest techniques in specialist surgery for benign prostatic enlargement. In addition to my clinical work, I serve as the Lead Clinician for Urological Cancer within my department. I led the department's cancer response during the COVID-19 pandemic and have contributed to the development of regional cancer guidelines. I am a GMC-approved trainer and regularly teach on national urology courses, helping to educate the next generation of urologists. Research and innovation remain important parts of my practice. I continue to participate in clinical research, have acted as a local investigator for several national studies, and have published widely in urological journals. I have also delivered presentations at national and international meetings and have been honoured with three Clinical Excellence Awards, as well as a number of academic prizes, grants and fellowships, including a British Urological Foundation Fellowship. My aim is always to provide clear advice, modern treatments and compassionate care, ensuring that every patient feels informed, supported and confident throughout their treatment journey.
